Silly, smiling faces at camp this week!!
We have had an exciting few days of camp!  Our theme this week is Fun with Fractions Exploring the Physics of Sound!  There's so much that can be done with Fractions mathematically & musically!  We are learning how fractions are used in our daily life activities.  Today our Jr. Camp Counselor, Peyton helped us with our measurements as we created our own SLIME following a specific recipe that included many fractions.  Our Mystery Musician Guests gave us cool facts about fractions in music too!
Ollie Patterson, professional saxophone player explained to us how sound travels through waves and he shared with us the many formulae, patterns and fractions involved in different genres of music.  In the picture below, he is helping us with the rhythm pattern in Bossa Nova music and then he played the Jazz Standard "The Girl from Impanema" as an example.  Some of the kids actually recognized the tune!!

On Monday, Gil Baskerville taught us how to make beats and actually write songs using his keyboard work station.  He let us choose different patterns, instrument sounds and genres to make our own song!  We made up a R&B/ Pop style song about Math & Music!

Mr. Josh has been teaching us about sound, pitch and rhythm all week as we prepare a group performance with the boomwhackers.  Boomwhackers are really cool teaching tools which help children visualize the physics of sound.

Infinity and Math History

Learning is fun at Math & Music Makers!!

In the past few days at camp, the students learned about the first African-American female engineer at NASA-Mary Jackson.  They also learned that an Engineer is a problem solver.  We worked on addition and multiplication fluency with minute drills and the students used dice to practice addition, subtraction and multiplication.

We continued to work on addition and multiplication fluency with minute drills.  We discussed place value and the meaning of “infinity”.  Did you know that there are in infinite number of numbers between 0 and 1?  We used dice to practice writing three digit numbers in Standard, Expanded, Word and Base Ten forms.  Finally, the students designed very cool chain reactions with colorful dominoes.

Our Mystery Musicians this week were full of knowledge and very entertaining.  Kerren Berz came on Monday and played violin.  In our previous blog we mentioned that she was the Concertmaster for the CSO, but she has also been featured on albums by Outkast, Pink, Cartel, Sinead O’Connor, and on the hit single “Survivor,” by Destiny’s Child.  She's amazing!!

On Tuesday Producer, Mixer and Sound Engineer, Leslie Brathwaite shared all of his cool stories about working with Beyonce, Ferrell and Justin Timberlake.  The kids were so excited to hear that he also worked on some of their favorite movies including all of the Minion and Transformers series.

On Wednesday, David Klausman showed us a small portion of his trumpet collection.  He played each of the trumpets and then let the kids try to play the trumpet also!!  We definitely have some future trumpet players at camp this week.  Blow kids, blow!!

Today the kids were surprised when I walked in an announced that I was going to perform along with our camp music teacher...the super talented, Joshua Franklin!  I sang a jazz song, then sang my single "R U Livin' Right" and told them how to buy it on iTunes. :-)   Mr. Josh played some  Beyonce tunes on the ukulele and then taught everyone how to play a C chord all by themselves on the ukulele.  After sharing the ukulele, Mr. Josh pulled out the keyboard.  Our brave camper, Veerdant joined in the fun played a tune on the keyboard for everyone!  Mr. Josh and I then sang a duet by Katy Perry to end the mini concert for the day.

We have had an exciting week thus far!  Tomorrow will end with a short culminating performance when the kids show some of the cool things they learned!  Math + Music = FUN!!  Check out the collage below!
